RAHUL and we also assign labels to ourselves and allow others to do the same. I think it's just habit and an attempt to understand the world we live in by simplifying it.

DEE ... oooops, I'll try not to do that too often (get you to think) ;-)

I think there's two separate questions here. WHAT am I and WHO am I?

The labels help give some answers to the WHAT question. They give some clues about my relationships to others, the things I do in my day to day activities and can be helpful in giving me some sense of order and where I fit in.

The WHO question is much harder, I think. For me, it's more about the purpose of my life, my identity, my relationship with God, the universal energy or whatever word defines for you the bigger 'sense of it all'. Mankind's been pondering this question for thousands of years without reaching any definitive answer :-) and will probably be dong so for thousands more.

Thanks to both of you for the comments.

Hi Ian,

You got me thinking now! What did you do that for? :)

As I was reading, I was giving myself some of the usual labels I am sure people have for me - Wife, Mother, Granny, daughter, Sister, Aunt, Administrative Assistant. I'm sure there are others that I don't want to know about. I don't mind any of those labels but I don't want to be just one. I am sure I am a different "label" to different people as well. If I am not all those labels then what am I? Some will say the answer is - I am me. What does that mean?

Ian,

Now I understand your perspective on the MBTI personality test, and why it could be limiting rather than empowering if taken the wrong way. Makes a lot of sense!

I can't deny that I assign a label to people too quickly sometimes, and it's something I'd like to learn how to deal with and overcome. Limiting our ability to connect with certain groups of people because we hastily assign labels to them is pretty darn stupid.

I look forward to your upcoming post on how to bypass this automatic behavior.

Thanks for this post!
