August 28th 1963 saw Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. give arguably one of the greatest speeches ever made. I’ve never written an article around a video and I don’t know why I’m drawn to do that today.
I just enjoy going with my instinct to see where it leads!
It sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it, even though I wasn’t born when he gave it. I was born 75 days later (11 days before one of the other great events that year, the murder of JFK).
In many ways this blog represents my own ‘I Have A Dream Speech’.
If you were giving this today, what would your ‘I Have A Dream’ speech dream be about?

Wow – I wish I could say the dream that instantly sprang to my mind was honourable and inspirational… That it was about being passionate for the rights of all people and celebrating every single difference from the micro to the macro.
Instead, the dream that sprang to my mind has been a huge wake up call that I need to pull my head out of my, er, proverbial, and start looking for and seeing the bigger picture.
Thank you, Ian.
(And I absolutely LOVE this speech!!!!)
That was incredible, Ian. I didn’t realize it until now, but unbelievably I’d never seen the whole speech. I will answer your question, but I will really have to think about it. I’ll make a post about it in the coming weeks.
That is – hands down – my favorite speech. When I listen to it, I hear a speech that is truly about love. It uses ‘equality’ and ‘justice’ to frame the issue, but it’s a head fake. “I Have A Dream” is about love, pure a simple.
My “I Have A Dream” speech would also be about love.
Hi Ian,
That is such a powerful speech…it makes me cry. For me, I too dream of a world where everyone would just get along. Where everyone would learn that in the end all that matters is love. I dream of a world where violence is no longer a daily reality. I dream of a world where no one has to be homeless and everyone is properly fed.
The interesting thing is that when King said this speech everyone thought that the idea of an African-American being President was a pipe-dream and now we have Barack Obama. So dreams do come true. For all those things listed above in this comment, we all have the power to see it be a reality but cynicism, negativity and doubt prevent it from happening.
So part of my dream would be that everyone wake up and realize that each and every single one of us has the ability to make the world a better place and that we each are so powerful that there is no need to waste every precious breath on stupid crap. So those are my dreams.
Ian, this was undeniably a powerful speech. Thank you for featuring it.
My own dream is one of worldwide love, peace and compassion – that a day will come when our world will be without fear, violence, poverty, or indifference; and that we will recognize and value our oneness.
Ian,
I love this speech. Like you, it moves me no matter how many times I hear it.
I have a dream for equality for all gays and lesbians.
Thanks for the comments so far, all of you!
If I put all these dreams together I see a world I would like to be part of. Instead I’ll comfort myself with the thought that at least we’re all doing something to create it, simply by publicly sharing our dreams.
I love you all!
